A Constant Visual Feast

There is no poster for Deidra & Laney Rob a Train (at least not one that I’ve found via multiple Google image searches). There should be a poster for Deidra & Laney Rob a Train. Is this going to be a thing for movies that debut on Netflix (or any streaming service) instead of premiering in theaters? Are they going to be shorted a poster? That seems nefarious to me. (It’s also not a fair statement to make. Burning Sands has a poster, after all.)

I digress. Listen: This little gem of a movie nearly made my heart explode. As noted in the first paragraph of my review of the film (for Paste Magazine), calling Deidra & Laney Rob a Train “cute” is kinda unfair to it, but boy is it ever cute. It’s just cute by virtue of earnestness and heart and genuine sentiment. Its cuteness isn’t manufactured. On top of that, it’s substantive, wrestling with social anxieties and coming of age in ways that marry well with its central train robbing caper plot.

Basically, I dug it. I’m concerned that original streaming movies like this will eventually obsolesce the theatrical experience, but if that does happen, at least we can be assured that we’ll get to see good movies through streaming. (I’m not sure that’s much consolation but it’s better than none.)
