Oh, Top of the Lake: China Girl; I wish I liked you better.
The first season of Jane Campion’s SundanceTV series is phenomenal, make no mistake; also make no mistake that she should have left it at one season, assuming that her plan for following it up was always, well, this. Top of the Lake: China Girl isn’t “bad,” per se, but lord, it’s really not good, and it’s even less good coming from someone like Campion, who in theory knows better than to do some of the thunderingly crazy shit she does here.
I went long on the season over at The Playlist, weeping all the while as I wrote my piece. What a letdown.
