A Constant Visual Feast

A story: This originally started out as a piece about A.T. White’s Starfish, a somber, sad, genre-bending movie (part sci-fi, part horror, part bluesy mood) about the world’s imminent end via alien monster invasion. It’s tricky to categorize. It also hinges on a series of mixtapes that, played together, could save the planet. 

Rather than follow that thread, which admittedly I like more as a talking point than as the subject of an entire essay, we ultimately turned this into a round-up of movies on digital and VOD that’re worth your time to seek out and watch. (High Life isn’t on here, in case you’re thinking about it, because High Life wasn’t available at the time I wrote this piece.) The round-up also includes David Robert Mitchell‘s Under the Silver Lake, S. Craig Zahler’s Dragged Across Concrete, Diego Ongaro’s Bob and the Trees, and Lukas Feigelfeld’s Hagazussa: A Heathen’s Curse, to date one of 2019’s best horror movies. (Plus: Columbus and Marjorie Prime, two of 2017’s best movies full-stop.)
