A Constant Visual Feast

This started out primarily as a praise piece for Megan Fox, the lead actress of Karyn Kusama‘s Jennifer’s Body and, in my opinion, the key to what makes the film function on every level: As a film, of course, and also as bait for getting male movie critics into openly confessing their sexism. 

I don’t know how much I can hold attraction to Fox against heterosexual men; she’s, y’know, attractive. But reading over reviews of the film produced by male minds ten years ago, it’s hard not to wonder aloud what in the hell they were thinking. Jennifer’s Body is very much not the kind of horror movie that deploys the female form for shits, giggles, and boners. This should be clear from the synopsis. Maybe I shouldn’t wonder too hard, as most critics tend not to be very good at their jobs, and as most critics are men, well, you connect the dots.

Anyways. The piece over time morphed to include Kusama and screenwriter Diablo Cody, because the great prank the film pulls on dudes is a prank pulled by star, director, and author, and it felt important to acknowledge that.
