“Begun, the ‘Unicorn Wars’ Have”

I didn’t get the chance to write about Alberto Vázquez’s film Birdboy: The Forgotten Children, so naturally I leapt at the chance to write about his latest, Unicorn Wars, not at all prepared for the heights of fucked-upedness it reaches. They are very high heights. I do not recommend ascending them unprepared.

I watch a lot of weirdo cinema, so I wouldn’t say this threw me off or broke me in any way, but I did need to revisit my expectations before reviewing, lest I do the movie and my words a disservice. Unicorn Wars is very much weirdo cinema. But I can’t think of the last time a weirdo movie like it came along and, scene by scene, defied any guesses I could make about where it was going and where it might end up, so take that as mighty praise.

You can read my full review of this special, deranged little movie over at Paste Magazine.
