Revisiting Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans today, with my understanding of Nicolas Cage’s style and appeal as an actor greatly enhanced, and likewise my grasp of just how bad the aftermath of Katrina really was for minorities, was a trip. Grant that Cage’s character hallucinates breakdancing souls and all manner of lizards while under the influence of varying narcotics. Grant also that time is the best indicator of how we feel about a movie. I loved this movie then; my feelings for it now are somewhat harder to qualify with a single word, because it’s just so good.
