“‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets’ Should Have Been the Future of Blockbusters”

So, yes: Technically, I’ve written this piece before. But also technically, that was five fucking years ago, and I can write it again with that longer view in mind. We did not have as many Marvel movies in 2017 as we do now, or Star Wars movies, or Jurassic World movies. We did not have broadly well-received maximalist entertainment like Everything Everywhere All At Once, either, or meat-and-potatoes blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick, or a shred of proof that audiences might – might! – be sick of watching only Disney tentpoles in theaters.

Consider this essay the sequel to the first, in other words, with one thing unchanged: Dane DeHaan still sucks.
