“In 2014, ‘John Wick’ Felt Audacious. 10 Years Later, It’s Still a Miracle.”

This is my blog, where I post and peddle and promote my own stuff. But because it’s my blog, I also get to, I dunno, share pieces written by my peers, the ones I admire anyway – both “pieces” I admire and “peers” I admire, I mean. In this case, the piece, Brandon Streussnig’s retrospective on the one-in-a-million chance of John Wick‘s success, highlights what I have to say in my own piece about that film; as such, I am quite happy to point you to Brandon’s work.

Because let’s face it: Movies like John Wick don’t come along every day. I don’t care if you’re into action movies, or Keanu Reeves movies, or “wronged hitman” movies; if you’re into good non-fiction, then the story of how a movie about a contract killer avenging his dead dog came to not only pull at the box office, but influence American action cinema made in its wake for years to come, is one worth attending. Plus, hey: Say what you like about Reeves’ acting*, he’s an exemplary human being and one of the few beloved Hollywood actors who’s worthy of the praise. The guy is a saint.

You should read all about him, and about John Wick, via Brandon’s piece at Inverse, and my piece, at Men’s Health.

*If you say “he’s bad at it,” I reserve the right to say, “you are wrong, go buy me an ice cream.”
