A Constant Visual Feast

Until Caroline Lindy’s Your Monster came along, I was not sold entirely on Melissa Barrera as a modern-day horror icon. I’m in the minority of folks who think little of the Radio Silence Scream sequels, and I didn’t think Abigail was all that hot, though Barrera is good in it; she turns out stronger work in her non-horror movies from the last few years, a’la Carmen. 

Your Monster gives her material to work with that’s more suitable to her talent, the way Carmen does, and on top of that, the movie occupies a little-considered horror niche at the same time: The “horror-rom-com.” Not everything needs to be categorized to death, but there’s intention in Lindy’s application of the expectations baked into each genre, and they gel really nicely around Barrera’s performance here with Tommy Dewey. It’s like Beauty and the Beast meets The Odd Couple meets The Shape of Water meets the gleeful malice of Tales from the Crypt.
