A Constant Visual Feast

One of my happy places in life is that extended moment of contentment I derive from watching an expectation getting upended; it is always, always, always good to have one’s assumptions challenged and disproven, especially when the result is a positive learning experience for the person doing the assuming, and double especially when the thing they’re assuming about is a thing I happen to love, like heavy metal and stupid comedies.

Heavier Trip is a dingbat hangout romp in the tradition of films like Airheads, where the stereotyped leads – metalheads – turn out to be anything other than what the stereotypes tell us they are. It’s also a neat little stage for the women of BABYMETAL, Japan’s “Kawaii-metal” pioneers, who show up as themselves to provide a foil for one of the film’s characters, as well as to rock. They’re about as far as your imagination would ever take you if you close your eyes to picture those stereotypes in your head, and, well, I had to write about them.
