“Pioneering Black Filmmaker Oscar Micheaux Gets Definitive Kino Lorber Collection”

We will never know just how many movies are lost to time and human negligence, and not the movies of today but those of antiquity, from the medium’s nascent period; most will not think twice about the loss, or the gaping wound it leaves in cinema as an art form and as an industry. Keep that in mind if you ever take it on yourself to pore over Kino Classics’ Oscar Micheaux: The Complete Collection, a total accounting of every film made by a pioneer and legend of American filmmaking.

It’ll drop your jaw to realize that for as much material is contained in this set, it only encompasses a portion of the movies Micheaux made in his lifetime; this includes trailers for lost movies, which feel both like salt in the cut and a salutary vision of what was and, perhaps, what could have been, if those movies had survived.
