“‘Eat The Rich’ Was Never As Grotesque As It Was In ‘Delicatessen'”

Yum, yum! Have we had our fill of eating the rich yet? A very good argument was made at another outlet I write for that, in fact, that we have hit a wall with that politically fashionable niche, whether on television or in the movies. I tend to agree. So it was a treat to go back to 1991’s Delicatessen, a film released in a moviegoing space where stories in the “wealth class critique” space could stretch their legs, and enjoy all over again Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s vision of a French cannibalistic dystopia. Surprisingly, given the brief? It’s still a goddamn delight. Dominique Pinon is one of cinema’s greatest gifts.
