“‘Weapons’ Breaks New Ground When It Comes To Kids In Horror”

I like Zach Cregger’s literary approach to horror filmmaking; he justifies the use of chapters and segments by the way he ties each into the others, without repeating material through sloppy overlapping, all while enhancing what we know and surprising us with what we don’t. The guy’s a born filmmaker.

There’s a ton of ink worth spilling about his relationship to the subtext, and how this is ultimately his tribute to his friend, the comedian, actor, writer, producer, and local sexpot Trevor Moore; when I give Weapons a second spin, I’ll likely experience it through that lens. But on my first go, I thought about it as a parent, and it freaked me out so much that the first major jump scare drew a “fuck that” from me heard throughout the theater. (In a good way!)
