If I have to answer my own question* here, it’s that Hollywood has no idea what to do with unique, original, and / or unconventional movies, whatever combination of the three they happen to be. If fair really is fair, then the system owed the Spierig brothers more than what it’s given them since Daybreakers‘ release, but fair isn’t fair, so, well: that’s that.
Daybreakers isn’t my favorite of the Spierig’s movies (that would be Undead), but the sheer invention they show in their worldbuilding rivals that of many bigger movies with bigger budgets; if it is lopsided and overcooked, and if Willem Dafoe’s accent slips like a gosh-dang Birkenstock-wearin’ hippie on icy Boston sidewalks, then it is sustained by its imagination, and by Hawke and especially Neill, playing one of the most dastardly villains horror knew in the aughts.
