“‘EO,’ The Oscars’ Oddest Nominee, Proves We Need More Movies From Animal Perspectives”

There was never much chance that Polish eccentric Jerzy Skolimowski’s EO was going to take home the prize in the International Feature Film category at this year’s Oscars, but I held on to some measure of hope. A fool’s hope, of course. Good movies don’t usually win the awards they deserve*. Neither do movies with non-standard narrative perspectives. Neither do movies where the protagonist is a sad donkey.

All the same, I made the case for why EO should win, in part because I believe in my message – movies told from the POV of animal characters can, in fact, be good – and in part because I really want to write the essay for the inevitable Criterion Blu-ray release, and I guess this is my way of manifesting success.

You can read this piece over at Polygon, and someday, you can read my Criterion essay in the Criterion Blu-ray release, because I’m making it happen.
