“Charley Yang Is The Man Behind The BoyWithUke Mask”

Imagine my surprise to find out that BoyWithUke, internet personality, musician, and possible vigilante, actually grew up in roughly the same neck of the woods I grew up in. Wait: scratch that. Don’t imagine my surprise. That’s easy. Imagine how dumb I felt not knowing that until the last minute. There. Challenge mode.

I am impressed by artists like Charley Yang, who despite their age – basically, in my estimation as one of society’s decrepit, he’s a baby – sing honestly from places of vast life experience, as if they’ve existed long beyond their years and have somehow managed to keep up the front the whole time. For one, it takes great circumspection to speak with that level of elder authority. For another, and this is according to my experiences, those artists tend to be shy. In our conversation, Yang wasn’t shy per se, but he struck me as a little nervous, which is hilarious to me given that he’s at least able to perform in the voice of one far advanced in their wisdom than I. I guess this is why I don’t make art, and why I just write about it.
