“The Sundance Film Nobody’s Talking About (But Everyone Should Be)”

Hey, guys, it’s okay: you’re not on Amanda Kramer’s wavelength, you can’t match her freak, and all that sort of thing. Not everyone is for everyone. But I dig Kramer, and even I have to do legwork to unpack her movies, so might I recommend a robust regimen of lunges and squats?

By Design is an odd film in a filmography made up entirely of odd films; not even Please Baby Please goes as hard as “a woman swaps places with a chair.” Unexpectedly, By Design ends up feeling accessible in spite of the puzzling magical realism, probably because Kramer gets better with every movie and also (more so) because at this point, I think even men inclined toward left-leaning politics understand at least intellectually that the experience of being a woman today (perhaps especially in America) is such that being a finely crafted piece of furniture admired by all seems preferable.
