A Constant Visual Feast

I told my editor that I can review music other than just metal, and they took me at my word; so it was that I ended up on the assignment for Sincerely, by Kali Uchis, an artist I know of but whose work I’ve listened to very little of. Oops! Brush-up time is crunch time when you’re reviewing a new album; fortunately, Sincerely, (and yes, that extra comma is part of the title) speaks for itself*.

That said, the review I ended up writing is the rare example of work I wish I could get a do-over on; not because I don’t like it or anything, but because the more I thought about it, the more that motherhood is the “in” for understanding the bulk of the record. Uchis isn’t just a mother, of course, but she returns, time and again, to the existentially awesome experience she’s had raising her baby son, throughout the record, so I think in this case it’s fair to say that Sincerely, would be an entirely different “thing” if not for that experience.
