“This Is the Scariest Movie Shark of the Year”

I’m not about to provide a full count of all the shark films released in 2025, but I have seen several, including Hot Spring Shark Attack (which I adore) and Dangerous Animals (which further proves that Jai Courtney has juice). Neither of them is in the same league as Kiah Roache-Turner’s Beast of War, because the league in question here is the same league dominated by Jaws and other shark films that are almost as good as Jaws, and honestly, that amounts to maybe four movies.

It’s an appropriate year to reflect on Jaws as a pop culture phenomenon and an institution unto itself, given that the film turns 50; there really haven’t been many good shark movies in the last 50 years, just fun, trashy ones, for the most part, which have their place and hold their own value. Beast of War is many cuts and slashes and puncture wounds and lacerations above those movies, though, and several under Jaws, which is a good place to be for a shark movie rooted in real historical events that is nonetheless tied to the effect Spielberg’s masterpiece has had on the movies since 197-fucking-5.
