“Tarsem Singh’s ‘The Fall’: The Almost-Lost Cult Classic”

Here’s a little bit of bonus material for you guys: “You bastard, don’t watch it while having fucking breakfast! [Laughs]”

That’s Tarsem giving me shit, probably rightly so, for the sin of pairing a morning screening of The Fall, gussied up in glorious 4K, with a bowl of granola. I eat while I watch movies! It’s what I do! I also drink while I watch movies, and clip my toenails, file my nails, and marinate in depression and existential dread while I watch movies! I’m a multitasker.

Honestly, interactions like this are one reason I seek interview assignments – not that I am typically ribbed by the people I speak with, necessarily, but I’d be lying if I didn’t go into each interview with the goal of getting one raw, human moment out of my subject at minimum. I’d say that I do get that moment, more often than not, though it’s not every day that the moment actually plays into the piece I’m writing*.

Besides: I love The Fall. It’s an all-timer** for me. And seeing it for the first time in almost 20 years really does feel like seeing it for the first time all over again. I was happy to relay that experience, buttressed by my conversation with Tarsem, for JoySauce.

*This caveat does not apply to straightforward Q&A style pieces, of course.
**Remind me to update my top 10, which is woefully out of lockstep with the times.
